Tania Morales appointed head of Mexico City's COPRED

Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada Molina has appointed Tania Morales Olvera as the new president of the Council to Prevent and Eliminate Discrimination (COPRED). The decision follows a participatory selection process by the organization's Consultative Assembly.

Morales Olvera is a lawyer and activist known for her work defending the rights of trans youth and her experience in both civil society and public administration. Upon her appointment, she emphasized that while legal rights for trans individuals have been recognized, cultural change is necessary to prevent ongoing discrimination. She stated, “Having identity documents does not prevent people from suffering discrimination. Cultural change is a job that must be done every day.”

Mayor Brugada also recognized the eight-year tenure of former president Geraldina González de la Vega, noting the institution's role in strengthening human rights and equality within the capital.
