Tania Sánchez highlights barriers for women with disabilities in Mexico
Mexican activist and designer Tania Sánchez is highlighting the physical and social barriers faced by women with disabilities in Mexico. In an interview marking the National Day of Women with Disabilities, Sánchez discussed how inaccessible infrastructure and societal prejudices impact personal autonomy, love, and sexuality.
Sánchez, who conducts activism alongside her partner Alex Castillo through the social media account ‘iWheelLoveU’, noted that even routine activities like dating require extensive planning to find accessible bathrooms or cinemas. Beyond physical obstacles like blocked paths and poor infrastructure, she reported facing discrimination in medical settings. Sánchez described experiences of infantilization and lack of professional respect during gynecological consultations, where some providers questioned her autonomy or expressed disbelief regarding her romantic relationships.
