Tanker explosion in Benue State causes fatalities and destruction

A petroleum tanker overturned and exploded at the Oshigbudu-Obagaji junction in the Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State. The accident occurred when the tanker fell while negotiating the junction, causing fuel to spill and spread to a nearby filling station along the Oweto axis.

The resulting inferno destroyed major parts of the Oshigbudu community, including several houses. Local officials, including Agatu Vice Chairman John Ikwulono, stated that the exact number of fatalities is currently unconfirmed, but many people are feared dead, including those unable to escape the flames. The emergency response was reportedly hindered by the lack of a local fire service, with the nearest available unit located in Otukpo, approximately one hour away.
