Aframax Rio oil tanker catches fire off Sochi coast

The Liberian-flagged oil tanker Aframax Rio caught fire in the Black Sea off the coast of Sochi, Russia. The Russian Ministry of Transport reported that the vessel was struck by unmanned surface vehicles, triggering a massive blaze and crude oil spill. The fire was initially so intense that emergency responders were unable to approach the ship.

All 23 crew members, who are Indian nationals, were successfully rescued without injury. The incident caused thick plumes of black smoke to rise over the Sochi region, prompting local authorities in the Sirius federal territory to temporarily close beaches and advise residents to keep windows closed and avoid outdoor activities. Air and water quality monitoring is ongoing.

The Aframax Rio has been identified by Ukraine as part of Russia’s shadow fleet and was subject to Ukrainian sanctions in February 2026. While the Russian Ministry of Transport attributed the incident to a drone attack, Ukraine has not officially claimed responsibility for the strike.
