Tanker fire off the coast of Sochi threatens Russian maritime security

A large oil tanker, identified by the Ukrainian agency UNIAN as the Aframax Rio, is on fire off the coast of Sochi, Russia. The vessel, which flies the Liberian flag and is part of the Russian ‘shadow fleet’, was reportedly carrying approximately 95,000 to 105,000 tons of crude oil, intended for transport to India.

The ship’s captain ordered the evacuation of all 23 crew members, and no fatalities have been reported. Thick black smoke from the fire has been observed over the city. Local authorities have closed beaches, and official Dmitry Plishkin has advised residents to limit time spent outdoors and to keep windows closed.

While the vessel is located in neutral waters, there are reports suggesting it may have been targeted by maritime drones. Authorities are currently monitoring air and water quality in coordination with Roshydromet.
