Tanker fire on Otedola Bridge injures two in Lagos

A diesel-laden tanker carrying approximately 33,000 litres of petroleum products fell from the Otedola Bridge on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Monday, October 19, 2026. The vehicle caught fire upon impact, causing significant damage and resulting in severe burn injuries to two individuals.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that the victims were rescued from the scene and evacuated to the Lagos State Accident and Emergency Centre at Toll Gate for medical treatment. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, deploying units from Alausa and Ikeja, successfully extinguished the blaze, though damping-down operations were required to prevent re-ignition.

While the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation, eyewitnesses reported that properties worth millions of naira were destroyed. The incident caused heavy traffic congestion, forcing motorists to seek alternative routes. Emergency response efforts involved the Federal Road Safety Corps, the police, and the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Agency.
