The Panama-flagged tanker New Andros, which was carrying approximately two million barrels of Iraqi fuel oil, was struck by a drone in Iraqi territorial waters on Wednesday morning. The impact caused a fire on board, which was subsequently extinguished by Iraqi rescue boats. All 22 crew members, including the Greek captain and first engineer, are reported to be safe and uninjured.

This incident occurs amid heightened maritime tensions in the Persian Gulf. The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that several other commercial vessels in the northern Gulf and Gulf of Oman were disabled by gunfire during overnight military activity. Additionally, a vessel was observed listing while anchored 24 nautical miles from Port Rashid in the United Arab Emirates, potentially following a strike by an unidentified projectile.

In a related escalation, Iran announced it had attacked ten ships near the Strait of Hormuz, following the destruction of five Iranian tankers by United States forces. Concurrently, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced the establishment of a maritime restricted access zone extending from Chabahar toward parts of the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea.
