Strait of Hormuz tanker struck by unknown projectile
A tanker entering the Strait of Hormuz was struck by an “unknown projectile” on Monday, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). The attack resulted in minor injuries to two crew members. Despite the strike, the vessel remained operational and continued its journey to the next port under its own power. No environmental damage or oil leaks have been reported.
The incident occurs amid heightened tensions in the Persian Gulf, which has led to a significant reduction in maritime traffic. While the strait normally sees approximately 125 large commercial vessels daily, recent data shows traffic has dropped to roughly a dozen vessels passing through the area during recent weekends.
Despite the increased risks and reduced traffic, energy flows remain active. Some tankers are traversing the strait with transponders turned off to mitigate risks. Analysts note that while the disruption of the Saudi East-West pipeline has impacted logistics, oil exports from the Middle East remain relatively strong.
