Tanner Houck nears return with upcoming Red Sox rehab assignment

The Boston Red Sox are receiving positive injury updates regarding their pitching staff. All-Star right-hander Tanner Houck is expected to begin a minor-league rehabilitation assignment with Double-A Portland next week. This marks a significant step in his recovery from a hybrid reconstruction of his right ulnar collateral ligament and flexor tendon repair performed in August 2025. Houck has already participated in scrimmage action in Fort Myers, reaching 94 mph on his fastball during a recent outing.

Interim manager Chad Tracy indicated that Houck could potentially serve in a relief role late in the regular season due to the time constraints required for a full return to starting duties. This development comes as the Red Sox face pitching depth challenges following recent injuries to Tyron Guerrero and Justin Slaten.

Additionally, Johan Oviedo is progressing in his recovery from a right flexor strain. After completing a bullpen session, Oviedo is scheduled for another side session next Tuesday. If he responds well, he may begin a rehab assignment toward the end of next week. Other pitchers, including Garrett Crochet, are also working toward returns, providing much-needed relief for a staff that has seen increased strain due to recent absences.
