Tanning bed searches surge despite ‘pale girl winter’ trend

Despite the rise of the ‘pale girl winter’ social media trend on TikTok, which encourages embracing natural skin tones, interest in tanning remains high. Data from the Nationaal Huidfonds shows a 110 percent increase in Google searches for ‘tanning beds’ over the past week, and a 70 percent increase compared to the same week last year.

This resurgence is partly driven by the ‘tanmaxxing’ trend, where users strive for the darkest possible tan. Health concerns are mounting as recent forecasts suggest a significant increase in skin cancer diagnoses in the coming years. Experts and individuals note that UV damage, such as pigmentation and sunspots, often manifests as long-term skin damage that remains visible years after exposure.
