Tanzania advances carbon trading and regional power connectivity
Tanzania is advancing its environmental and energy infrastructure through carbon trading initiatives and regional power connectivity. Dr. Richard Muyungi, Permanent Secretary in the Vice President's Office, noted that community-led forest management is driving the carbon trade, with over 2 million hectares of village land involved. He highlighted mangrove forests as particularly valuable, capable of sequestering approximately 1,000 tons of carbon per hectare annually.
In the energy sector, construction of the Iganjo substation in Mbeya has reached 93% completion. This facility is part of the Tanzania–Zambia Transmission Interconnector (TAZA) project, designed to link the power systems of Tanzania and Zambia. The project aims to stabilize electricity supply in the Mbeya, Songwe, and Rukwa regions, supporting mining, industrial growth, and job creation while facilitating cross-border energy transmission.
