Tanzania aims to become a top 10 global food producer

Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba has announced Tanzania's ambition to rank among the world's top 10 food-producing nations and become a leading producer in Africa. This goal is part of the country's Development Vision 2050.

Speaking at the Norman Borlaug International Dialogue in Des Moines, Iowa, the Prime Minister highlighted significant government investment in the agricultural sector. Under the leadership of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, the Ministry of Agriculture's budget increased from 294 billion Tanzanian shillings in 2021/2022 to 1.241 trillion shillings for the 2025/2026 period.

These investments have contributed to a food self-sufficiency level of 130 percent. Additionally, agricultural exports rose from US$2.1 billion in 2021/2022 to US$3.7 billion in 2024/2025. Agriculture currently accounts for 24.6 percent of Tanzania's GDP, employs 65 percent of the workforce, and provides approximately 30 percent of export earnings.
