Tanzania and Egypt propose maritime and logistics cooperation
Tanzania and Egypt are advancing a strategic partnership to enhance transport and logistics connectivity between Egypt, East Africa, and Central Africa. Key initiatives discussed by Transport Ministers Kamel El-Wazir and Makame Mbarawa include the establishment of an Egyptian-Tanzanian international consortium to develop a multipurpose terminal at the Port of Dar es Salaam.
The proposed cooperation also involves creating a new shipping route connecting Egypt’s Red Sea ports, Sokhna and Safaga, with Dar es Salaam. Additionally, both nations plan to establish reciprocal logistics zones and integrate maritime, road, and rail transport networks.
Separately, maritime ministers from the Maritime Organisation for Eastern, Southern and Northern Africa (MOESNA) met in Dar es Salaam to discuss a regional cabotage protocol. This proposal aims to create a legal and commercial framework that allows African-owned or African-based operators to capture a larger share of regional shipping traffic, thereby retaining more freight revenue within African economies.
