India and Tanzania urge inclusive AI governance at UN in Geneva

At the United Nations Global Dialogue on AI Governance in Geneva, India’s Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh called for responsible, secure and inclusive rules for artificial intelligence. He emphasized human oversight, protection of human rights and the need to close capacity gaps so that the Global South can meaningfully shape AI policy.

Tanzania’s Minister for Communication and Information Technology Angellah Kairuki also addressed the forum, describing AI as a strategic pillar of the country’s Vision 2050 and outlining reforms to create a robust regulatory framework, modernise data‑governance, and expand digital infrastructure. She warned that developing nations must not be left behind as AI transforms agriculture, healthcare, education and other sectors.

Both ministers framed the dialogue as a decisive moment for multilateral cooperation, urging international partnerships and equitable sharing of AI benefits. The UN forum, established under General Assembly Resolution 79/325 following the Global Digital Compact, aims to build capacity, promote transparency and ensure ethical AI deployment worldwide.
