Tanzania and Kenya implement mandatory travel insurance

Tanzania and Kenya have both implemented mandatory inbound travel insurance requirements for foreign visitors.

In Tanzania, new regulations effective October 1 require travelers to obtain specific insurance based on their first point of entry. Those entering via Zanzibar must use the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation, while those entering the mainland must use the National Insurance Corporation. Travelers must maintain a digital or printed certificate and QR code throughout their trip. The policy remains valid for 92 days, which may cover multiple entries within that period.

Following Tanzania's lead, Kenya has integrated mandatory inbound travel health insurance into its Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) application process. As of October 6, applicants for the ETA must demonstrate valid coverage to complete their application. The base cost is approximately $44 per traveler, though processing and access fees can increase the total cost to around $52. This requirement applies to most foreign visitors staying less than 12 months, though citizens of East African Community countries are exempt.
