Tanzania bolsters nuclear security for AFCON 2027

The Tanzania Atomic Energy Commission (TAEC), in collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), has launched preparations to enhance nuclear and radiological security for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Tanzania will co-host the tournament alongside Kenya and Uganda.

During a five-day workshop in Arusha, TAEC Director General Professor Najat Kassim Mohammed emphasized the need for coordinated efforts to prevent the malicious or unauthorized use of radioactive materials during the event. The initiative aims to build national capacity to detect, prevent, and respond to potential nuclear-related threats that could target the large influx of international players, fans, and officials.

The workshop involves various stakeholders, including the Tanzania People’s Defence Force, the Tanzania Police Force, customs and immigration authorities, and stadium managers. Tanzania has already begun implementing radiation detection systems at strategic locations and border entry points to bolster security ahead of the competition.
