Tanzania Education Minister directs TCU to reform university admissions

Tanzania's Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Adolf Mkenda, has directed the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) to establish a more efficient system for student admission and registration. The directive aims to ensure that universities do not admit more students than their existing infrastructure and teaching staff can support, thereby protecting the quality of higher education.

During a meeting in Dodoma with university vice-chancellors and council chairpersons, Prof. Mkenda emphasized that the new system will focus on fairness, transparency, and matching enrollment numbers to the actual capacity of each institution. He stated the goal is to create a system that “will not cause controversy” and avoids overstretching academic resources.

While the new procedures are being finalized, students are encouraged to continue submitting their applications while awaiting further instructions from the TCU. Additionally, the government is working to expand university capacity through the construction and expansion of campuses across various regions to increase enrollment opportunities without compromising educational standards.
