Tanzania hosts international conference on blue economy development
The Fifth International Blue Economy Conference, held in Dar es Salaam from September 7 to 9, 2026, focused on strengthening Tanzania’s maritime sector through legal alignment, technology, and education.
Felix Chakila of the Ministry of Constitutional and Legal Affairs emphasized the necessity of aligning domestic laws with international maritime regulations to ensure sustainable resource management and prevent legal conflicts in international relations. This alignment is viewed as a key component of the National Development Vision 2050.
At the closing of the summit, Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute (DMI) Board Chairman Peter Olekashe highlighted the need to bridge the gap between academic research and industrial needs. He urged researchers to address practical challenges within the blue economy to ensure findings lead to investment and job creation rather than remaining purely theoretical. DMI Principal Prof. Tumaini Gurumo noted that discussions spanned human resource development, resource conservation, and entrepreneurship.
