Tanzania implements empowerment strategies for women and special groups
The Tanzanian government is implementing strategies to empower women and special interest groups through education on property ownership, land rights, entrepreneurship, and financial management.
Deputy Minister for Community Development, Gender, Women, and Special Groups, Maryprisca Mahundi, stated that the government will provide legal and social support to widows facing abuse or inheritance disputes. She urged families to protect widows' rights and condemned harmful traditional practices, such as female genital mutilation.
In the Ngorongoro District, women and widows have formed economic and social networks to engage in small businesses, livestock keeping, agriculture, and tailoring. These groups have begun accessing government loans to strengthen their production. Local Member of Parliament Yannick Ndoinyo pledged to work with authorities to address challenges faced by these groups and the elderly to ensure their continued participation in national development.
