Tanzania launches InnoIP program to protect local innovators

The Tanzanian government has launched the InnoIP Tanzania program to assist over 5,000 innovators in legally protecting their work, converting ideas into business opportunities, and stimulating job creation. The initiative aims to address the issue of intellectual property theft, which often occurs when creators disclose ideas before securing legal protections.

Launched on August 22, 2026, by Tanga Regional Commissioner Ambassador Dr. Batilda Burian during National Education, Skills, and Innovation Week, the program seeks to connect local innovation with larger markets. Dr. Burian emphasized that legal protection is essential to attract investors to startups that lack proof of intellectual property ownership.

Additionally, the Fursa Women program was announced to empower female entrepreneurs through the use of technology and digital systems to scale their businesses. Dr. Burian also called on universities and research institutions to transform academic research into practical products and urged investors to support Tanzanian innovators.
