Tanzania launches nationwide rural electrification campaign
Tanzania’s Energy Minister, Dr. Juma Zuberi Homera, has directed the Rural Energy Agency (REA) to launch the “Washa Umeme Vitongoni” (Light Up the Sub-villages) campaign across all regions. The initiative aims to ensure that every sub-village in the country has access to electricity by 2030.
In the Namtumbo District, the minister recently oversaw the connection of electricity to the Lindi B sub-village, a project costing 95.4 million Shillings. Of the 424 sub-villages in Namtumbo, over 300 have already been electrified, with 72 more scheduled for connection.
In the Mwanza Region, officials reported that REA has successfully brought electricity to all villages and is currently working on sub-villages. Out of 3,448 sub-villages in Mwanza, 1,597 have received power, while work continues in 619 locations. The expansion is supported by the Tanzanian government and development partners, including the World Bank.
