Tanzania mandates tax details display for social media businesses

Tanzania has implemented new regulations requiring commercial enterprises operating on social media to display their tax details directly on their online profiles. Signed by Finance Minister Khamis Mussa Omar, the amendments to the Tax Administration (General) Regulations, 2016, aim to strengthen monitoring of the digital economy and broaden the national tax base.

Under the new rules, individuals and companies must prominently display a Tax Identification Number (TIN), a Tax Clearance Certificate, or another official tax document on their accounts to facilitate inspection and enforcement. While the specific tax regulation does not explicitly define ‘social media,’ existing Tanzanian legislation describes it as platforms allowing the exchange of interactive user-generated content, which would include services such as Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and X.

Following the directive, Kenyan authorities addressed concerns regarding the impact on regional trade. Caroline Karungu, Principal Secretary for the State Department for East African Community Affairs, confirmed that bilateral consultations between Kenya and Tanzania resulted in an understanding that Kenyan-owned businesses would not be negatively impacted by the order.
