Tanzania mandates travel insurance for foreign visitors

Tanzania has implemented mandatory inbound travel insurance for foreign visitors entering mainland Tanzania via land, sea, or air. Issued through the Insurance (Inbound Travel Insurance) Regulations, 2026, the policy requires non-citizens to hold valid coverage to avoid being denied entry.

The insurance premium is set at $44 (approximately Ksh 5,700) and is valid for up to 92 days, allowing for multiple entries during that period. The coverage includes emergency medical treatment, medical evacuation, repatriation, and loss of luggage. Policies can be purchased prior to travel or at the point of entry through the National Insurance Corporation (NIC) or other registered insurers partnering with the NIC.

Citizens of East African Community (EAC) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) partner states are exempt from this requirement. This move follows a similar mandatory insurance framework introduced by Kenya in July 2026 and a previous requirement for visitors to Zanzibar in October 2024.
