Tanzania Ministry of Health urges reduction in alcohol and drug use
Tanzania’s Ministry of Health is urging citizens, particularly youth, to reduce excessive alcohol consumption and avoid drug use to prevent mental health challenges and social instability. Dr. Grace Magembe, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, emphasized that early alcohol use among youth can negatively impact education, employment, and family relationships.
To combat addiction, the government has expanded its treatment capacity from a single center to 14 addiction treatment facilities. These services are being decentralized to reach more citizens, with officials emphasizing that treatment should be provided without stigma or discrimination. The government also intends to collaborate with sober houses to increase outreach to those affected by substance abuse.
Additionally, health professionals are undergoing training across 17 regions to improve preventive and curative mental health services. Dr. Hamadi Nyembea, Director of Medical Services, noted that these professionals are being trained to identify challenges early and provide appropriate referrals to specialized facilities.
