Tanzania orders increased Tanzanite research to boost production

Tanzanian Minister of Minerals Anthony Mavunde has ordered enhanced research into Tanzanite deposits in the Mererani area to boost production and secure the economic contribution of the rare gemstone. During a visit to the Franone Mining & Gem Co Ltd mine in Simanjiro, Mavunde emphasized the need for modern technology to discover new reserves as existing mining sites reach depletion.

Onesmo Mbise, Director of Franone Mining Gems Ltd, noted that production has faced challenges because initial mining areas are exhausted, forcing operations into deeper underground veins that require more advanced expertise and research. To support these efforts, the government has allocated 10 percent of mineral sector revenues toward geological research.

In addition to increasing production, Mavunde introduced the use of specialized technological helmets designed to allow miners to monitor underground environments. This innovation is intended to improve safety, security, and oversight to combat mineral theft and smuggling.
