Tanzania police officer dies in Tanga custody

A police officer, Koplo Mwita (H. 1796), died while in custody at the Tanga District Police Station on August 27, 2026. At the time of the incident, Mwita was among six police officers, including one officer and five others of various ranks, being held for criminal investigations.

According to a statement from the Tanga Regional Police Command, a scientific investigation was conducted in the presence of the deceased's relatives. The findings indicated that the cause of death was asphyxiation due to hanging. The body has been released to the family for funeral arrangements.

The Tanga Regional Police have urged the public, media, and social media users to refrain from spreading unverified information or drawing conclusions not based on official investigation results, noting that spreading misinformation is illegal. Official investigations into the circumstances of the death are ongoing.
