Tanzania reimposes rally ban and arrests dozens ahead of protests

Ahead of planned anti‑government demonstrations scheduled for Tuesday – the 72nd anniversary of the ruling party’s founding – authorities in Dar es Salaam arrested dozens of people. Security forces warned against any demonstrations, accusing unknown individuals of recruiting youth for the protests. Demonstrators seek democratic reforms and the release of opposition leader Tundu Lissu, who remains detained on treason charges after calling for electoral changes. The army spokesperson emphasized that the military would act to preserve peace and ordered citizens to report any attempts to organise illegal rallies.
