Tanzania strengthens regional leadership in migration and labour mobility

Tanzania is strengthening its role as a central hub for migration management and labour mobility in East and Southern Africa. International Organization for Migration (IOM) Director General Amy Pope met with President Samia Suluhu Hassan to reaffirm cooperation on safe, orderly, and regular migration, focusing on areas such as migrant protection, climate-related displacement, and border management.

Additionally, Tanzania has assumed the chairmanship of the Regional Technical Advisory Committee on Labour Mobility for East and Horn of Africa countries, succeeding Uganda. The transition aims to enhance regional policy dialogue and coordinated measures for managing labour migration. Tanzania is integrating these mobility issues into its National Development Vision 2050, which includes initiatives like the National Skills Development Programme to improve employment services and labour market information systems.
