Abidjan AU summit urges African states to boost domestic financing for industrialisation

From 20 to 24 July, the African Union’s joint session of its specialised technical committees on finance, trade, industry and minerals took place in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. The meeting brought together ministers, central‑bank governors and development partners to discuss financing Africa’s industrial transformation.

Claver Gatete, Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa, called on African countries to strengthen domestic resource mobilisation, expand manufacturing, develop regional value chains and invest in sustainable energy to reduce dependence on external funding. He highlighted the African Financing Stability Mechanism and the Pan‑African Payment and Settlement System as key continental initiatives to support long‑term development financing.

Tanzania’s Deputy Finance Minister Eng Mshamu Ali Munde stressed the need for debt‑sustainable strategies, stressing that Africa’s abundant mineral, trade and tourism potential can drive growth if coordinated among member states. Both speakers warned that reliance on external financing leaves African economies vulnerable to global shocks and urged policy coherence across the continent.
