Emmanuel Nchimbi resigns as Tanzania Vice President
Tanzanian Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi has announced his resignation from office and his retirement from active politics and public service, effective September 4, 2026. In a formal letter to President Samia Suluhu Hassan, Nchimbi cited Articles 50(2)(c) and 149(2) of the Tanzanian Constitution as the legal basis for his departure.
Nchimbi stated that his decision was made to honor a personal commitment made to President Hassan in August 2025, in which he promised to step down if she required a different vice president. He expressed a conviction that the President now desires a change in leadership for the role. His departure follows less than a year in office, having been sworn in in November 2025.
While Nchimbi framed his exit as an act of loyalty, reports have suggested underlying political tensions and ideological disagreements between the two leaders regarding governance and constitutional reform. Following the announcement, the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party expelled Nchimbi for violating party rules and regulations. The party has named Deogratius Ndenjembi as the new Vice President.
