Tanzanian activist Twaha Mwaipaya allegedly abducted in Kenya

Twaha Mwaipaya, a prominent Tanzanian opposition activist and former youth mobilization official for the CHADEMA party, was reportedly abducted in Kenya on Sunday, October 25, 2026. The incident occurred around 2:00 PM in the Kamulu area of Machakos County, near Nairobi.

Amnesty International reported that Mwaipaya was traveling in a taxi to visit friends when he was intercepted by individuals in three vehicles, including a Toyota Land Cruiser Hardtop. Witnesses stated that masked men blocked the taxi and forced the driver to depart with the activist, while his companion managed to escape.

CHADEMA Vice-Chairman John Heche has appealed to Kenyan President William Ruto to ensure Mwaipaya is found alive and safe. The Linda Mwananchi Movement has also called for an independent investigation and demanded that Kenyan authorities prevent any forced removal of the activist across the border.

This incident follows a pattern of alleged cross-border abductions in the region, including the 2024 abduction of Ugandan leader Dr. Kizza Besigye and the January 2025 seizure of Tanzanian activist Maria Sarungi Tsehai in Nairobi. Activists have urged authorities to monitor the Namanga border to prevent Mwaipaya from being smuggled back into Tanzania.
