Tanzanian Energy Minister attends nuclear technology meeting in Washington D.C

Tanzanian Energy Minister Deogratius Ndejembi arrived in Washington, D.C. on August 26, 2026, to participate in a ministerial-level meeting for the launch of the Atomic Technologies Licensed for Applications at Sea (ATLAS) program.

Organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the ATLAS program focuses on the safe, secure, and sustainable use of nuclear technologies in maritime operations. This includes the use of nuclear-powered vessels and floating nuclear power plants.

The meeting is considered strategic for Tanzania as the nation is in the early stages of developing its own nuclear power program. The participation aims to facilitate knowledge exchange regarding nuclear technology developments, such as Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), as well as the necessary legal, policy, regulatory, and safety frameworks.
