Tanzanian officials urge peace following land-use violence

Tanzanian Prime Minister Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba has strongly condemned acts of vigilantism following recent violent clashes between farmers and herders in the Ruvuma region, which resulted in several deaths. Speaking to Members of Parliament in Dodoma, the Prime Minister directed state authorities to take strict legal action against those involved in such lawless activities.

To prevent future conflicts, the Prime Minister instructed village and ward leaders to ensure that land sales and allocations strictly adhere to established land-use guidelines. He emphasized that the government will not tolerate lawbreaking and urged citizens to resolve economic and land-use disputes through legal channels rather than violence.

Government spokesperson Gerson Msigwa also called on citizens to maintain peace and stability to support national development goals. He noted that maintaining a secure environment is essential for achieving the National Development Vision 2050, which aims to grow Tanzania’s economy from approximately $90 billion to $1 trillion by 2050. Msigwa further cautioned youth against spreading inflammatory content on social media, noting that security agencies are monitoring digital content for illegal activities.
