Auction for Stranded 'Rapid' Cargo Ship in Kandıra, Turkey Receives No Bids
The 81‑metre bulk cargo ship Rapid, flying the Tanzanian flag, ran aground off Kandıra in Kocaeli Province on 18 September 2025 after encountering adverse weather. The vessel’s crew of seven—six Ukrainians and one Iranian—were rescued safely by a Turkish Coast Guard helicopter following a coordinated response that also involved AFAD, gendarmerie and fire‑fighter units.
Following abandonment of the ship, insurance assessors completed damage and legal evaluations, after which Tanzanian authorities authorised a judicial‑execution sale. The Kocaeli Regional Port Authority subsequently held an open‑bid auction for the vessel, but no offers were submitted, leaving the sale unresolved after roughly ten months of the ship remaining idle in the Kandıra waters.
