Taobao and JD.com pivot Double 11 strategy toward services and AI

Major Chinese e-commerce platforms are shifting their strategies for the Double 11 shopping festival from pure price competition toward service quality, AI integration, and specialized logistics.

Taobao and Tmall are focusing on the Northeast Asia market, specifically launching an exclusive “Honorary Service” for users in Taiwan. This service acts as a comprehensive insurance mechanism to mitigate uncertainties caused by new customs regulations, offering tax subsidies of up to NT$1,000 and after-sales compensation. Additionally, Taobao has increased its official logistics weight limit to 70kg to facilitate the transport of large items like furniture and appliances.

JD.com has eliminated its traditional deposit-based pre-sale model in favor of direct discounts on ready stock. The company is heavily investing in AI technology, deploying tools such as AI shopping assistants, digital humans, and AI-driven selection models across retail and logistics. JD.com is also prioritizing “service consumption,” expanding its ecosystem to include over 100 service items ranging from domestic cleaning and car maintenance to elderly care and robot repair.
