Taormina tourism grows despite Mount Etna volcanic activity

Tourism in Taormina remains resilient despite recent disruptions caused by volcanic activity from Mount Etna. Data from July 1 to August 13, 2026, shows growth in daily average visitors (+2.34%), average length of stay (+4.89%), and overnight stays (+2.34%) compared to the previous year.

Local transport and parking usage have also seen significant increases. Despite a ten-day period of flight restrictions at Catania Fontanarossa Airport during the peak Ferragosto period, which caused travel delays and cancellations, the local tourism sector expects a stable summer season.

Flight restrictions at Catania and Comiso airports have been lifted, allowing operations to return to full capacity with up to 12 landings per hour. While Mount Etna continues to emit volcanic ash, seismic tremors remain at medium-low levels. Scientific bodies, including the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), continue to monitor the volcano closely as the situation remains dynamic.
