Taoyuan City launches Indigenous Festival and Hakka Baseball Broadcast
Taoyuan City Government’s Indigenous Affairs Bureau inaugurated the inaugural "Taoyuan Indigenous Shopping Festival" on August 1, running through August 23. The event links more than a hundred indigenous‑owned brands and stores, offering consumers a chance to win prizes—including cash, airfare and electronics—by spending NT$300 at participating outlets or market stalls. Organisers say the festival aims to raise the profile of indigenous products, expand market opportunities and showcase the growing diversity of indigenous enterprises across retail, food, creative and service sectors.
On July 30, the city’s Hakka Affairs Bureau partnered with the Taiwan professional baseball league to stage the nation’s first bilingual Hakka‑Chinese broadcast of a professional game. Sports anchors Xu Zhangyuan and Chen Xiongwei provided commentary in both languages, accompanied by interactive features such as online voting, a Hakka‑language Q&A and an AI‑driven language‑learning tool. The broadcast attracted more than 700,000 viewers, highlighting efforts to integrate Hakka language into popular culture and everyday life.
