Taoyuan improves sewage coverage to 28% amid environmental upgrades
Taoyuan Mayor Chang Shan-cheng reported significant improvements in the city's sewage infrastructure during a recent municipal meeting. The sewage coverage rate has risen from 22.33% at the start of his term to 28% this year, moving Taoyuan from the lowest ranking among Taiwan's six major cities to fifth place.
Key metrics show that the number of households connected to the sewage system has grown by 41.39%, reaching 277,025 households. Daily sewage treatment volume has also increased by 41.48% to 162,000 cubic meters, bringing the overall sewage treatment rate to 73.75%.
Mayor Chang noted that these infrastructure improvements have led to visible environmental benefits, specifically citing the Nankan Creek. Previously characterized by strong odors and pollution, the creek has seen improved water quality and the return of fish populations due to better sewage management and cooperation with upstream industrial facilities.
