Taoyuan Public Library wins London Design Award silver

The Taoyuan Public Library has won a silver award at the 2026 London Design Awards for its special edition red envelope design, titled ‘Ma Shang Fa’ (Immediate Prosperity).

Designed by lead graphic designer Hsiao Yen-hsuan along with assistants Chang Yao-sheng and Liao Wei-tang, the product integrates traditional Lunar New Year culture with reading-themed aesthetics. The design features a 16-grid character matrix that allows users to interpret various auspicious phrases such as ‘read immediately,’ ‘happiness through reading,’ and ‘success arrives immediately’ depending on the orientation. The design also incorporates the library’s English abbreviation, ‘TYPL,’ and includes Braille for ‘Happy New Year’ to support universal design and accessibility.

Library Director Hsih Chao-hui stated that the award recognizes Taoyuan’s efforts in deep-rooting local culture and promoting innovative reading. The library aims to continue integrating design and cross-disciplinary resources to make reading a part of daily life and seasonal celebrations.
