Tapalqué implements long-standing shared housing model for seniors
A unique shared housing model for seniors has been operating in Tapalqué, Argentina, for 17 years. The municipal complex, established in 2009, currently provides housing for 31 residents across 27 units.
Designed for individuals over 60 who can live autonomously, the program emphasizes independence over traditional nursing home care. Residents occupy units containing a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and dining area, with the option for up to two people per unit. Admission requires professional interviews and medical evaluations of physical and cognitive health.
The municipality provides several services, including nursing assistance on weekdays until 8:00 PM and periodic weekend checks. Additional support includes lunch from Monday to Saturday, weekly deep cleaning, and maintenance of common areas. To prevent social isolation, the complex hosts community activities such as theater workshops, literacy classes, literature groups, and film cycles.
