Tapanuli Tengah to build four Sabo Dams for flood prevention

Authorities are accelerating infrastructure development in the Tukka district of Tapanuli Tengah, North Sumatra, to mitigate the risk of subsequent flooding and sediment flows during heavy rainfall. The project involves the construction of four Sabo Dams designed to control water flow and sediment from hilly areas.

In the initial phase, two dams—Sabo Dam Aek Tukka and Sabo Dam Sigala-gala—are scheduled for completion by December 2026. Two additional units are planned for construction in 2027. This initiative is being carried out alongside the normalization of river channels and the construction of a 1.6-kilometer retaining wall.

Muhammad Tito Karnavian, head of the Post-Disaster Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Acceleration Task Force for Sumatra, emphasized the urgency of the project to protect residential areas, offices, schools, places of worship, and farmland from mud deposits and material flows.
