Tapas Dey, veteran Tripura politician and former MLA, passes away

Veteran politician and former Congress MLA Tapas Dey has passed away in Agartala, Tripura. Reports indicate he died at a hospital following a prolonged illness, aged between 81 and 84.

Dey’s political career began in the early 1970s after he arrived in the state as a refugee from East Pakistan in 1965. He was elected to the Tripura Legislative Assembly from the Salgarh constituency in 1972. Beyond his legislative role, he was a prominent figure in the media fraternity, serving as a newspaper editor and an associate member of the Agartala Press Club for over three decades.

Political leaders across various affiliations have expressed condolences. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha noted Dey’s significant contributions to the state’s public life. Former Tipra Motha chief Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, who identified Dey as his first political mentor, requested that party workers observe a minute of silence and lower flags to half-mast in his honor.
