TAPI pipeline progress discussed by Afghan and Turkmen leaders in Herat
Afghanistan’s Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, met with Turkmenistan’s National Leader, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, in Herat province to discuss the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline project.
Baradar reported that work on the TAPI project in Herat is progressing according to schedule. He proposed a long-term gas agreement with a flexible pricing formula designed to protect against fluctuations in European markets. Additionally, Baradar called for the construction of a gas distribution network in Herat and the establishment of a joint technical and legal commission to resolve remaining project issues.
Berdimuhamedow reaffirmed Turkmenistan’s readiness to cooperate on the pipeline and the regional gas distribution network, noting that foreign companies have expressed interest in investing in the project. The discussions also covered expanding trade through the reopening of the Aqina border crossing for oil transit, facilitating Afghan goods at the Turkmenbashi port, and rebuilding the Herat–Torghundi railway.
