Calabria regional referendum remains scheduled after court rejects appeal

The Tar Calabria has declared the appeal filed by the Calabria Region against the referendum process inadmissible due to a lack of jurisdiction. The regional administration, led by President Roberto Occhiuto, had sought to block a referendum regarding amendments to the regional statute that would introduce the roles of two regional undersecretaries.

The court ruled that the matter falls under the jurisdiction of ordinary judges rather than administrative ones, as the proceedings do not involve the exercise of administrative powers. While the ruling does not address the merits of the reform, it leaves the door open for the Region to re-file the action before the appropriate ordinary court.

Opposition leaders, including members of the Democratic Party (PD), have criticized the administration's attempt to halt the vote, calling it a political failure and an effort to protect regional power. The referendum remains scheduled for November 29, 2026, unless further legal or legislative actions are taken.
