Tara Polar Station begins year-long Arctic research expedition
An international research expedition has commenced in Norway, utilizing the Tara Polar Station to study the Arctic Ocean. The mission involves twelve individuals—six scientists and six crew members—who will drift within the sea ice for up to one year to better understand the state of the polar ocean and the Earth.
Described by marine researcher Marcel Nicolaus as the ‘ISS of the Arctic,’ the vessel was built by the French Tara Ocean Foundation. Its oval design is specifically engineered to withstand intense ice pressure. The ship is equipped with three levels of facilities, including laboratories, living quarters, a kitchen, and a hospital. A specialized laboratory features seawater access to allow a diving robot to collect data from beneath the ice layer.
The project is a collaborative effort involving 32 scientific institutions worldwide, including the Alfred-Wegener-Institut and Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena. The expedition follows the historical transpolar drift research concept previously utilized by explorer Fridtjof Nansen. The crew is expected to remain on board for at least eight months, with a potential relief date in mid-April.
