Taraba nursing students protest after violent hostel raid

Hundreds of students from the Taraba State College of Nursing Sciences in Jalingo staged a peaceful protest on Monday following a violent overnight raid on an off-campus female hostel. During the early-morning attack, armed assailants allegedly raped a female student, severed one of her fingers, and looted mobile phones and other personal valuables.

The victim was transported to a hospital in the Mile 6 area of Jalingo for medical treatment. This incident marks the second security breach targeting the college’s students in two weeks; a previous raid last week involved the theft of electronics and assaults on residents.

Protesters barricaded the college entrance to demand immediate intervention from security agencies and the Taraba State Government. Students expressed frustration that promised security upgrades from the Commissioner for Tertiary Education have not been implemented. They are calling for the urgent commissioning of on-campus housing to move students away from vulnerable off-campus accommodations that lack perimeter security and surveillance.
