Taraba State Governor alleges officials aiding illegal mining

Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas has alleged that certain government and security officials are facilitating illegal mining operations within the state. Speaking at a meeting with artisanal and small-scale miners in Jalingo, Kefas claimed that the illicit network is deeply embedded, stating, “We have more illegal mining inside than those outside.”

To combat these activities, the governor vowed to dismantle the existing networks and strengthen mining sector regulations. His administration plans to establish a system that distinguishes legitimate artisanal miners from criminal operators by requiring registered miners to operate in designated areas. This approach aims to improve traceability and oversight by encouraging mineral off-takers to purchase only from regulated locations.

Kefas also directed the miners’ association to provide a comprehensive list of necessary equipment and costs, noting that the government would explore financing options to support legal mining operations. Additionally, he ordered the compilation of accurate data regarding miners, their locations, and community operations to facilitate more effective regulation and security coordination.
