Taran Noah Smith discusses Patricia Richardson’s exit from Home Improvement
Taran Noah Smith has provided new insights into why Patricia Richardson left the sitcom ‘Home Improvement’. Speaking on the ‘Outgrown’ podcast, Smith stated that Richardson, who played Jill Taylor, frequently clashed with writers to maintain a sense of realism in her character’s portrayal.
Smith noted that after the show’s original creators departed following the first few seasons, a new production team took over. He claimed many of these new writers lacked children, leading to dialogue that felt ‘out of character’ or prioritized jokes over believable storytelling. While Smith suggested Tim Allen took a more hands-off approach with the writing staff, Richardson continued to ‘fight the good fight’ to ensure the show remained realistic, a struggle that eventually contributed to her departure.
In addition to creative differences, significant pay discrepancies played a role in Richardson’s decision not to return for a potential ninth season. Richardson previously noted that Disney offered her $1 million per episode, while Allen was set to receive $2 million.
