Tarana Burke discusses MeToo impact following Cornell University allegations

Tarana Burke, the organizer who founded the MeToo movement, is addressing questions regarding the impact of the movement following an alleged gang rape at a Cornell University fraternity. While Burke described the continued occurrence of such violence as “disheartening,” she argued that the scale and speed of the national response to the Cornell case demonstrate the progress made in public accountability.

Burke noted that the movement has facilitated systemic changes, such as the passage of lookback laws in several states that allow survivors of sexual abuse more time to file legal claims. She emphasized that the MeToo movement was intended to spark sustained conversation and responsiveness rather than serving as a final solution to gender-based violence.
