Taranto: Fatal multi-car collision on Punta Penna Bridge

A major multi-vehicle collision occurred on the Punta Penna Bridge in Taranto during the early hours of Saturday, involving eight cars. The accident resulted in the death of a 65-year-old woman and left approximately ten people injured, including the victim's husband and son. Emergency responders, including eleven ambulances and firefighters, attended the scene, with the most critically injured being transported to the central hospital in Taranto.

Following the incident, regional councilor Antonio Paolo Scalera has called for an urgent hearing to investigate the safety conditions of the bridge. Scalera is seeking clarity on speed controls, signage, maintenance history, and the specific responsibilities of the various entities managing the infrastructure. The inquiry aims to determine if existing safety measures and speed deterrents are operational and effective to prevent future tragedies.
